Hundreds of gallons of motor oil are still being scrubbed, sprayed and vacuumed off of a Banning road and out of an oil tanker that overturned after exiting Interstate 10 at about 6 a.m. today.
Highland Springs Road remains closed between Joshua Palmer Way and 2nd Street.
Sgt. Steve Hobb of the Banning police said it would take several hours to open the road, which serves as the border between Banning and Beaumont.
He said that 500 to 1,000 gallons of the oil poured onto the road before Riverside County Fire contained the spill by about 9:30 a.m.
Much of it drained into sewers but did not reach any dirt, Hobb said.
Capt. Fernando Herrera of the Riverside County Fire Department/Cal Fire said the tanker, still overturned under the I-10 overpass, would have to be drained of the remaining oil inside it before it is removed to prevent further spilling.
He said that after the tanker is removed and the road is cleaned, parts of the road can be reopened as they begin cleaning the sewers.
A private environmental services company and several Banning, Beaumont, Riverside County and state agencies are taking part in the clean up.
