County cleaning up hazardous spill
The Journal Gazette
At least 500 gallons of liquid petroleum material used by Allen County to control dust on roads spilled this morning at the county's South Maintenance Garage.
The leak at 8317 Tillman Road was discovered around 6 a.m., according to a written statement from the county.
The county said it was caused by a valve that malfunctioned as the material was being pumped from a semi-tanker truck owned by a private trucking firm into a county-owned tanker.
An "undetermined amount of the material" made its way into a nearby ditch, the county said, and was contained by placing piles of dirt and sand upstream and downstream.
Pumps were being used this morning to remove the material.
Officials said the cleanup should take most of the day to complete and that the area will be checked again in a few days to see if any other action needs to be taken.
Agencies working at the scene include the Allen County Highway Department, New Haven-Adams Township Fire Department, Allen County Homeland Security, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
No injuries were reported
